Are we walking into an employment crisis with the end of the furlough scheme? What skills are most needed and how are applicants going to stand out from the crowd? Wayne Brophy, CEO at CAST UK, a leading recruitment consultancy, talked to The Logistics Point about what follows next for the jobs market in logistics and supply chain.
How has the employment market in logistics changed over the last few months?
We have been extremely busy recruiting logistics vacancies. This specialism is still very busy and we are still seeing a high demand for skilled professionals. The e-commerce customers we work with have been exceptionally busy and many of them say they experienced peak volumes throughout the summer lockdown. Although we do not recruit blue collar workers, our clients tell us there is still a national shortage of drivers and a high demand for packers.
Some of our logistics clients work in the hospitality sector and, as we know, that sector has ground almost to a halt due to the pandemic. However, the government “Eat Out to Help Out” scheme has restarted the market and some of them are looking for people again. We also have customers in aerospace and engineering, a large proportion of whom are simply not busy. They have furloughed their employees and, in many cases, started making redundancies.
How does that reflect on job seekers?
From a candidate’s point of view we are clearly seeing a lot more people coming to the market. Our application numbers are at all-time high. We have also found that the best candidates already in jobs are very reluctant to move. On the other hand, it is a buyer’s market and clients are unwilling to compromise on their wish-lists.
Candidates usually move for a 10-15% increase on their existing salary, but in this market, they are willing to take a role for the same amount or perhaps even slightly less because they are out of work or facing redundancy. They are also prepared to take on roles that they are over-qualified or ……….
