First till-free shop opens in the UK

Logistics and Supply Chain News Uncategorized

The first till-free grocery shop where customers can pay using an online app and not queuing has opened. Sainsbury’s is the first British retailer to try out the technology at one of its Central London locations Holborn Circus.

The company explains they have chosen the store because more than 80% of all transactions were cashless, reports the Guardian. The new system allows customers to pick what they want from the shelves and pay as they go without having to wait at the tills. The shop still offers more traditional ways of shopping and has a single till where people can pay either by cash or card.

Some items had to be removed from the shelves like alcohol and tobacco as they require age verification – a process that slows down the customer experience. Customers in the area said they enjoyed the new experience.
