Achieving bold targets has always been one of the things the logistics industry is good at. Recently, however, companies have faced the need to think even bolder so they can successfully reach netzero operations. The Logistics Point talked to Kuehne+Nagel, one of the leading companies in the sector, to find out how they plan to become netzero and get to a place where they offset their emissions.

When large companies decide to show their commitment towards cleaner environment many people ask why. This is how our conversation with Kuehne+Nagel begins. The company say they launched their Net Zero Carbon programme “because we promise to provide our customers with environmentally friendly, sustainable and innovative supply chain solutions that will reduce our collective CO2 footprint and help stakeholders achieve their bold environmental targets”.

Secret ingredients

Many have made such a promise and the industry is full of examples when it was not met. But the logistics company is sure they can do it. The secret ingredient will be collaboration and a lot of different steps that range from more phone calls than flying to less electricity usage.

Over the past years, Kuehne + Nagel has considerably reduced its own CO2 footprint and will continue to pursue its efforts. Ongoing training programmes maintain and expand the environmental awareness of employees. For example, video conferencing increasingly replaces business trips. Direct CO2 emissions (GHG Scope 1 and 2) that cannot be avoided will be fully compensated as of 2020. But how is this going to happen?

Working closely with the customer is a core element of the program.

CO2 neutrality will be achieved through a combination of reduction and offsetting based on enabling advanced CO2 visibility. This is all in line with their overarching programme to protect the environment including decrease on electricity, reduced water consumption and recycling of waste. The company work hand-in-hand with airlines, shipping lines and haulage companies to provide sustainable operations and state-of-the-art technology. “The core element to make greener choices is to be aware and to track the CO2 footprint at each step of the value chain,” believe the company.

The logistics firm have partnered with various NGOs and developers in order to support their customers to create their own carbon neutrality path. “We work with nature-based projects around the world that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving the livelihoods of local communities and preserving biodiversity and wildlife,” Kuehne + Nagel say.

Sustainable solutions

Working closely with the customer is a core element of the program. Transparency is the best way to get good results so all interested parties are well aware of what is happening throughout the value chain and chose the best transportation option.

“As one of the leading logistics companies worldwide, we acknowledge the responsibility we have for the environment, for our ecosystem and essentially for the people,” the company explains. At the end of 2019 they made an announcement that will see them make all Less-than-Container-Load (LCL) shipments CO2 neutral starting from January 2020. It is based on a package of measures to fight CO2 emissions and provide sustainable and innovative supply chain solutions – hand in hand with their suppliers and customers. The project is a combination of detection, reduction and compensation.

At the end of our conversation from Kuehne + Nagel say they want to make sure people are aware such CO2 commitments are not only for large companies and that everyone can find their way to contribute to a cleaner planet. Climate neutral in not just CO2 there many other ways to help our environment, like waste and energy management, recycling, etc.
