NewMotion reaches 200,000 charge point milestone

News Technology

NewMotion, a leader in smart EV charging solutions and a Shell group company, has announced its expansive roaming network now provides electric vehicle drivers with access to over 200,000 charge points across 35 European countries. Notable recent partnerships include Volkswagen Group Charging in Germany, Enel X Mobility in Italy, and Gronn Kontakt in the UK*.

It took NewMotion 10 years to reach its 100,000 charge point milestone, which was achieved back in March 2019. Within two years, NewMotion doubled this figure, reflecting the speed and rate at which the EV industry is growing. For EV drivers looking for accessible and affordable, on-the-go charging, being given access to over 200,000 charge points enables drivers to roam seamlessly across Europe. As a Shell Group company, the continued growth of NewMotion’s operated charging network will support Shell’s ambition to operate 500,000 charge points by 2025.

Reaching the ‘tipping point’

With the UK announcing its plans to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030, the country is gearing up towards getting as many EVs on the roads as possible. NewMotion’s latest study revealed that over a third of British drivers plan to purchase an electric vehicle in the next five years1, demonstrating that British consumers are ready to support the UK’s transition to an electric future, and the so-called ‘tipping point’ of mass EV adoption in the UK is getting closer.

Last month also saw the UK government focus its attention on improving the customer experience for electric vehicle charging, following the launch of its new consultation. Four critical areas have been outlined by the government: quick payment processes; network reliability; price transparency and open data, all of which will help consumers charge their vehicle in a straightforward way, as well as paving the way towards a seamless driving experience.

NewMotion’s CEO, Melanie Lane, comments: “As EV adoption continues to grow, we know that EV drivers will be looking for reassurance that when driving, they won’t be caught short and run out of charge. By continuing to grow our roaming network through notable partnerships, we are helping to reduce this range anxiety and ultimately, improve interoperability throughout Europe. We will continue to look for more partners with open networks who want to make EV charging easy for drivers and are committed to expanding our European charging network beyond 200k charge points in the coming years.”

Greater interoperability

The availability of public charging infrastructure is a key consideration when making the switch to driving electric. With EV adoption on the rise globally, NewMotion’s commitment to expanding its network creates a better-connected charging network for drivers and provides greater interoperability, in addition to easing the worries of EV drivers around range anxiety. NewMotion currently collaborates with over 200 roaming partners, continuing its mission of enabling everybody to drive as many kilometres as possible powered by clean energy.

More than 395,000 registered drivers already use NewMotion’s charge card or app for a seamless charging experience on-the-go. Yet, an average EV driver currently still uses more than two charge cards. To streamline this process, roaming partnerships are key. They can help to create an open network in which drivers can access charging services across a number of networks, with just a single card.
