Arriva takes British government to court

The rail franchise operator Arriva is taking legal actions against the UK government after it lost a bid to run the East Midlands railway franchise to Dutch rival Abellio. The German owned company wants to find out more information by the Department for Transport (DfT).

This is the second legal challenge by an operator as Stagecoach has been removed from the rail industry as the DfT claims it has submitted non-compliant bids. The company says it will lose £30 million because of that.

The government decided to give the contract to a different company in April this year for routes between London St Pancras and the East Midlands including Nottingham, Leicester and Derby from August 2019.

Experts are worried what will follow as the government has decided to exclude Stagecoach for breaching established rules. Some say that it is not clear what rules were not followed and if the government can support its decision.
