Germany launches its first electric motorway
Germany has opened its first electric motorway between Frankfurt airport and a nearby industrial park. Currently the project, built by Siemens and supported by the German government, covers just part of the motorway but the plans are to extend it further.
The system is operational on 6.2 miles of the motorway where electric wires were installed and trucks can connect to the wires and drive with around 56 miles per hour. Truck can detect when the wires begin so they can connect to them and use an electric motor. When there are no wires trucks use a hybrid system.
